Historic Tynemouth hotel The Grand is a lovely place to spend the weekend ( but one man likes it so much he stayed for 17 years.

Travelling service engineer Graham Day, 62, has spent up to five days-a-week at the hotel for almost two decades ( and he even has his own room.

Graham is such a familiar face he joins staff Christmas parties and has said he would even consider living at the hotel when he retires.

He said: "If I retired I might consider retiring there.

"If I could I would pitch a tent in the veranda in the back garden, but I do not know if my wife would appreciate that."

Graham, who works for Idra Prince Ltd, spends Monday to Friday in his pounds 85-a-night room at The Grand before returning home to his wife Joan, 64, in Nottinghamshire on weekends.

He said: "When I first started working in the North-East in 1986 I was put up in another hotel that didn't have much of an atmosphere and seemed very unfriendly.

"I decided to go for a drive around the seafront in Tynemouth. …
