A mother was raped by a stranger as she walked home alone from a nightclub, a court was told yesterday.

The woman had spent the evening with her sister and friends visiting pubs in the Blyth area and ended it at a club in the centre of the town, Newcastle Crown Court was told.

But she argued with her sister and was making her way home on her own in the early hours when she became aware of a man walking behind her.

John Evans, prosecuting, said the fact that she was not actually on her own on the road initially gave the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, a degree of comfort.

But as she walked on into an alley she was attacked by the man, who threw his coat down, pushed her to the ground and got on top of her.

He said the man raped the woman ( who is in her 20s. He said the man ended the attack when he became aware of someone walking along the alley. …
