Crook trainer Howard Johnson plans to gallop his Cheltenham Gold Cup hope Grey Abbey after racing at Carlisle today.

Also taking part in the work-out will be Valley Henry, who is on target for the Daily Telegraph Festival Trophy, and Ballybough Rasher, also engaged in the same event as well as the William Hill Handicap Chase.

Making up the quartet is Backbeat, a contender for either the Royal & SunAlliance Chase or the Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase, who has joined Johnson from David Elsworth.

The current well-being of the Johnson string was underlined at Catterick yesterday when Motive provided Graham Lee with a winner on his first ride back from injury.

Out since breaking a collar bone at Wincanton on February 10, Lee resumed on the best possible note with Motive making it third time lucky in the Weatherbys Bank Novices' Hurdle.

Despite swerving left after jumping the final flight, the former Sir Michael Stoute horse was always doing enough to keep Beamish Prince at bay. …
