Mick McCarthy may have to juggle his resources as Sunderland look to keep the distance between themselves and Ipswich Town.

Julio Arca and Stephen Elliott are both expected to be available again for selection at Crewe Alexandra tomorrow, but the Black Cats boss admits picking his team will not be straightforward.

Arca has been out with a hip problem and Elliott a groin strain, but McCarthy is unsure if the pair will be up to playing against both the Railwaymen and Plymouth Argyle, Tuesday's visitors to the Stadium of Light.

"Hopefully they'll both be fit for Saturday," McCarthy said of the duo. "Whether Saturday-Tuesday's an option or not I don't know. We'll see."

The good news for McCarthy is his selection is further complicated by the form of those players who have deputised for Elliott and Arca.

Michael Bridges drew praise for what his manager felt was the striker's best performance of his second spell at the club and the manager could be tempted to stick with him at Crewe and make Republic of Ireland international Elliott wait for his chance. …
