It's time for us all to wake up to the state of our health today.

This shouldn't be hard to do. Just take a brief look at recent headlines.

The likes of 'THE OBESITY TIMEBOMB', 'CHILD BOOZERS' and '50-A-DAY HABIT KILLS 40-YEAR-OLD' all tell their own, chilling story.

And together they depict Teesside as having the unenviable record as one of the country's worst health blackspots.

Heart disease, lung cancer, high levels of smoking, obesity, underage drinking and poor diets are all wreaking their damaging tolls on our lives and those of our children.

And from today the Evening Gazette will strive to take every opportunity to highlight the facts and figures along with advice, helplines and guiding examples as our contribution towards making a difference to the state of the region's health.

Some of us may sometimes feel angry or picked upon as the Gazette focuses on smoking, drinking or diets. That is not the intention.

But we cannot allow the campaign to be weakened by worrying too much about causing offence by discussing certain lifestyles. …
