Concerned villagers in Northumberland are urging councillors to reject a proposed factory extension they say will overshadow the area.

Ovingham Village Trust has written to Tynedale Council planning committee members urging them to throw out a scheme for a 40m-high warehouse at Prudhoe's SCA Hygiene or defer a decision.

The application is expected to be granted conditional permission tomorrow.

However, local people feel they have not had enough time to object to the extension, which will only be seven metres shorter than New York's Statue of Liberty.

At the moment, much of the papermill is hidden by chalk heaps. However, the extension would be twice the height of the heaps and objectors say would block their views of the valley.

President of Ovingham Village Trust Frank Atkinson said: "This will have such a huge impact on this part of the valley that we feel Tynedale council can not give its approval. …
