Andy caine contemplates a tough baptism when he makes his World Cross-Country Championship debut in France on Sunday.

The Tynedale Harrier takes his place in the GB and Northern Ireland team after a superb second place in the Trials at Nottingham two weeks ago which earned him automatic selection to the six-man squad.

The 27-year-old, now trained by his father, John, will seek to consolidate his recent fine form after recovering from a hernia operation last year.

However, with the African nations expected to be a dominant force once again, a position among the leading Europeans is a more realistic target for the Loughborough-based athlete.

Also making the trip to central France is North Shields Poly's Ryan Stephenson, who competes in the under-20 championship.

While Caine lines-up in a GB vest for the first time, 18-year-old Stephenson has his second outing inside four months for his country after making his breakthrough in the team that competed in the European Cross-Country Championships in Germany in December. …
