A Mum who got so drunk she could not explain why her toddler was covered in bruises has been spared jail.

Lee Ann Thomas, 25, of Kildare Street, Middlesbrough admitted wilful neglect of a child in her care after the boy's concerned dad, Joseph Betti took the toddler to casualty.

Prosecutor Roger Moore told Teesside Crown Court that Miss Thomas had got drunk on June 30 and "could not recall" what had happened to Lucca who was nearly three at the time.

Her friend questioned her the following day about the little boy's bruising and red face.

Mr Moore said: "She made enquiries of the defendant and was told Lucca had fallen down stairs." On July 3 Thomas handed her son over to his father, who had joint custody of him, the court heard.

Seeing his son's injuries he asked her about it, Mr Moore said.

"She said Lucca had received them from a couple of young boys aged six or seven, when they tried to take his bike," he said. …
