Shay Given is confident that he will win his fitness battle to return to Tel Aviv's Ramat Gan Stadium on Saturday, (writes Alan Oliver).

The keeper says he expects to shake off his hip injury as he sets his sights on repeating Newcastle United's UEFA Cup victory in the same stadium when the Republic of Ireland go in against Israel in a crucial World Cup Group Four qualifier.

The Chronicle revealed on Monday that Given had to have an injection and tablets during the half-time interval at Portsmouth on Saturday and that he was doubtful for what is a crucial match for his country on Saturday.

However, Given said from Tel Aviv today: "It feels OK and hopefully it will stay away but it is hard to tell because touch wood I haven't had too many injuries.

"I hope that the four or five days rest will enable it all to settle down. Walking about it feels fine, but it is only when I do some goalkeeping and some movement that I will know if it's going to be okay. …
