Brown Fills Important Role for ACD

LAKELAND -- Arlington Country Day goes after the school's first basketball crown while trying to extend a streak to four consecutive years in which a Jacksonville team has finished as a champion.

Nease started the run with the 3A crown in 2002 and Raines kept the string going with 5A and 4A titles the past two years. This also marks the 18th consecutive year that at least one Jacksonville team has played in a title game, a streak that not even Miami, which perennially turns out several state champions, can match.

If the Apaches beat Tallahassee Maclay in today's 2A title game (noon, WOIJ 1010 AM), they'll likely need another big game from senior guard Eddie Brown.

Brown was a two-year starter in basketball and a three-year starter at wide receiver and cornerback on the football team until this basketball season. That's when Josue Soto transferred to ACD from Puerto Rico and took over as the team's top point guard.

"I think if it had been anybody other than Josue taking away his starting job, Eddie would have had a problem with it," ACD coach Rex Morgan said. "But he has such great respect for Josue and they're such good teammates that he was OK with coming off the bench."

That's the role that Brown played on Thursday when he came in the game midway in the first quarter and spelled starter Brian Hoff after Hoff injured his ankle.

Brown not only led a defensive charge of a diamond press which forced Orlando First Academy into 20 turnovers, he also scored a team-high 18 points and dished out a team-best four assists.

"I like my role coming off the bench It gives me a little time where I can observe what the other team is doing offensively and defensively," Brown said. "I sit with A.J. [Stewart] and we talk about what we'll do when we go in there because he's in there soon after I am. …
