The popular improvisational jazz ensemble Medeski Martin & Wood will headline the University of North Florida's fifth Great American Jazz Series Concert on Thursday.

The music begins at 7:30 p.m. in Lazzara Performance Hall of the UNF Fine Arts Center.

In keeping with the format of the UNF Jazz Series, artists John Medeski, Billy Martin and Chris Wood will also spend time on campus today and Thursday.

They will meet with music students and recount the experiences and lessons they have absorbed in their 13-year career that began with them criss-crossing the country in an RV to build their audiences.

"Our students enjoy a rare opportunity in jazz schools: to interact and perform with cutting edge artists and legends in the field," said Bunky Green, director of the UNF Jazz Studies Program.

UNF's Jazz Ensemble I will also perform at the concert, under the direction of Bill Prince and J.B. Scott.

The ensemble will take the stage first, playing selections that include familiar tunes like Thanks for the Memories and And the Melody Still Lingers On by Dizzy Gillespie.

Tickets for the concert are $25-$35 and $12 for students; they're available at the UNF Ticket Box Office in the Fine Arts Center, 620-2878. …
