Morpeth Harriers made it seven wins in a row when their quartet triumphed in yesterday's Elswick Road Relays at Newburn Business Park.

However, on this occasion, their B team, which had finished runners-up for the past four years, had to be content with eighth place.

Morpeth were at the head of affairs at the end of the opening 2.25-mile stage, as Dan Samuels' 10min 36sec was to be the second fastest of the day.

On stage two, Gosforth moved into pole position thanks to Drew Graham, with Morpeth's Andrew Lawrence in second just ahead of North Shields Poly and Low Fell.

On a competitive third leg, Tom Ranger, making his debut on the course, moved Morpeth back to the front with the fastest time of the day. Gosforth were in second, Elswick, through Ryan McLeod, had moved into third, with North Shields dropping out of contention as Chester-le-Street moved up to fourth.

On the glory leg, Dave Swinburne had time to relax for Morpeth as the title holders came home clear of Gosforth.

Elswick hung on to third place while Gateshead moved through to fifth after being 14th on the first leg.

Sunderland once again stamped their authority on the vets relay event, which was no surprise after British Vets cross-country champion Brian Rushworth beat the course record by 15 seconds.

Once Rushworth eased into the lead on the second stage after taking over in fourth, the Wearsiders extended their advantage to the finish thanks to the efforts of Glen Forster and Steve Coxon.

In a competitive women's race in which over 60 finished, victory went to Darlington's Bernadette Taylor for the second successive year.

The North Eastern Cross-Country champion pulled away from Claire Simpson (Jarrow and Hebburn) around the midway point to win by 16 seconds.

Gateshead's Mary Ferrier got the better of Delyth James in the battle for under-17 supremacy to finish in third place overall. …
