Hospital chiefs have admitted they cannot rule out a shift of services at a Teesside hospital.

In-patient child care and some maternity cases at the University Hospital of Hartlepool could be moved to the University Hospital of North Tees, as the NHS trust struggles to recruit new staff.

The admission comes just days after Professor Ara Darzi - the leading surgeon drafted in to steer the wide-ranging Tees Review health study - denied services would be cut while the review was under way.

He made the pledge when asked about the potential down-grading in services, at a meeting of Hartlepool Council.

But health bosses have stressed the move would be a last resort and they are doing everything in their power to stave off disruption to the services.

Speaking at a board meeting acting chief executive Aidan Mullen said: "Sickness and maternity leave made it difficult to maintain the rotas and so we looked the worst case scenario. …
