A Teesside student intends to take civil legal action against football ace Wayne Rooney if police do not charge him over an alleged nightclub assault, the Gazette can reveal.

Patrick Hanrahan of Eaglescliffe claims he was attacked by the England striker during an early-morning bust-up in a Manchester nightclub.

Mr Hanrahan, 22, told police he was punched in the head three times by the Manchester United star last week in the Tiger Tiger city centre club. Now, after giving a statement to Greater Manchester Police, Mr Hanrahan is waiting to see if criminal charges will be pressed against Rooney.

If not, Mr Hanrahan has pledged to launch a civil legal case which could see the Teessider claim monetary damages from the 19-year-old millionaire.

Speaking from the family home in Eaglescliffe Mr Hanrahan's father Brian said: "Patrick is waiting for the police to come back to him. If the police decide not to press charges he will take out a civil suit against Rooney. …
