Katrina Rosser left school with no qualifications and soon got a shock when she entered the big, wide world.

She expected to walk into a job and get a lot of money for not a lot of work. That illusion was soon replaced by the real facts.

But as managing director of a personal security and surveillance company, ProtAgAe and Eagle Executive Hire Services, she has proved that hard work can replace academic qualifications.

Once her illusions were shattered and reality kicked in, she enrolled in an art and design course at Redcar and Cleveland College.

"I began the course three weeks late and packed it in a month later," she said. "I wanted to live in my own place and be independent but realised that, unfortunately, took money."

One of her friends worked for a care home in Saltburn, so Katrina started doing relief work there, but that dried up after three months.

And that was when her fortunes began to look up. Trawling Jobcentres, Katrina saw an advert for someone aged between 16 and 18 with a bronze medallion in swimming. "I had no idea what the job was but got a shock when I turned up," she said.

"It was Nutech, a Teesside offshore survival training company, and the only qualification I had was my age. But I must have impressed someone because I was offered the job of junior training officer provided I could get the bronze medallion.

"It normally took three months to win the medallion but I did it in three weeks."

After five years of learning and then teaching first aid, underwater helicopter escape, sea survival, basic fire fighting, and trialling new Armed Forces equipment, Katrina and her boyfriend were looking to emigrate to Australia. Then her boyfriend graduated from Teesside University in construction management and took a job in London instead. …
