Introducing a new Monday feature designed to give attaboys to people, businesses and groups in our community, we pulled the following examples, mostly from the Times-Union.

(Yes, there is good news.) But readers are welcome to offer suggestions, too.

Salvation Army: It was 125 years ago this month that the Salvation Army came to the United States, determined to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the downtrodden.

We have no way of judging the army's spiritual impact, but it has been incredibly successful on the other front. That goes double in Jacksonville; the local food pantry and cold night shelter, particularly, are a real blessing.

The Salvation Army has been active in this city for 114 years, according to Maj. James Seiler.

May it last another 114 -- or, if it stays true to its mission, a lot longer.

Friends of library: Lovers of literature had a field day with the used book sale sponsored by the Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library. There were special tables set up for people buying more than 100 books at a time, reported a Friends spokesman. Over $100,000 was raised. In previous years, proceeds have been used for children and teen programs, an audio book collection and a DVD collection, said library spokeswoman Stacie Bucher.

Beautifying Sawgrass: Few people are aware of how hard people work, year-round, to make the Sawgrass golf course look so immaculate during The Players Championship.

Landscaping work for this year's tournament actually began last April, according to Ponte Vedra Shorelines. Among other chores, the newspaper reports, workers have planted 20,000 flowers and scattered 80,000 pounds of rye grass seed.

Hard work obviously pays dividends. The course looks incredible.

The best golfers in the world will be here through March 27. The best landscapers never leave. …
