Marc walton and Alan O'Brien were on target as Newcastle United claimed their first Premiership Reserve League win of the year, (writes Miles Starforth).

Graeme Souness and his coaching staff were at Kingston Park last night to see a youthful Magpies second string record a convincing 3-0 victory over Birmingham.

United's first win in 10 games equalled their best result of the season.

"I was delighted," said coach Tommy Craig. "Particularly because it was such a young team.

"Over the course of the 90 minutes we were the better team. They had a little spell before half-time where they came into it. Once we got the second goal it became relatively easy.

Craig's men opened the scoring in the 10th minute when down to 10 men, with midfielder Darryl Smylie having left the pitch following a collision with Birmingham's Sam Alsop. Before a substitute could be brought on, striker Walton's right-foot free-kick cannoned off the wall, giving one-time St James' Park trainee Ian Bennett no chance. …
