'Cudas Bounce into Semis; Jacksonville Advances in SPHL Playoffs after Silverthorn's Rebound Wins It in Overtime

Sometimes you want to be lucky and sometimes you want to be good.

The Barracudas had a little of both going for them during their quarterfinal playoff game against Huntsville on Wednesday night at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

Jacksonville cashed in a on a fortunate bounce, turned precision passes into another goal and leaned on goalie Kelly Shields to beat Huntsville 2-1 in overtime and advance to the Southern Professional Hockey League semifinals.

Jason Silverthorn scored the game-winning goal with 6:18 left in the first overtime period after a four-pass series that culminated with Silverthorn taking a feed from Greg Lecolst and beating Havoc goalie Matt Carmichael. Lecolst drew Carmichael to him before passing Silverthorn, who essentially had an empty net.

"Everyone should get a piece of that goal," Silverthorn said. "Brent Rumble started the play, Greg and Brad [Federenko] made some really nice passes and I was just in the right place to make it happen."

Jacksonville will open the semifinals against Macon at 7:35 p.m. Friday night at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. It is the first game of a best-of-three round. The second and third games will be played in Macon.

Silverthorn's goal preserved the win for Shields. Shields was lightly tested in the first two periods, but with Jacksonville up 1-0 heading into the final period, the Havoc offense began challenging Shields more often.

At one point Shields, who finished with 35 saves, made four stops in 15 seconds as the Havoc offense crashed the Jacksonville net during a third-period power play.

"What can you say [about Shields] other than he was just tremendous," said 'Cudas assistant coach Brett Strot, who took over coaching duties for suspended head coach Ron Duguay. "That's what we brought him here to do and tonight he played as well as anyone could have. …
