A high security prison where inmates were found opening mail containing people's bank details has suspended a prison officer.

The officer is understood to have been suspended for a breach of security following the revelation that inmates at Durham Prison were asked to open hundreds of letters for recycling and in at least one case a convicted burglar found account details of a NatWest bank customer.

Prison officers in charge of the task alerted the acting governor, Jennifer Mooney, and the decision was made to discontinue the work immediately because of security issues.

The Prison Officers' Association has confirmed it will be defending the officer at Durham Prison in any future action and an appeal had been lodged against the suspension.

Steve Cox, a member of the executive for the Prison Officers' Association said: "We were absolutely astonished that this sort of information was being opened by prisoners in a jail like Durham.
