Ceremony will mark sacrifice and survivors

Veterans will join religious leaders to pay tribute to those who died in the Second World War.

Events are being held throughout the country to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, in May and Victory over Japan Day, in August.

And on July 3, at the start of the national Veterans' Week, the Joint Ex-Servicemen's Association of Newcastle upon Tyne, has planned a celebration for veterans.

The Association's media liaison officer Fred Jewett said: "There is a similar event taking place in Hexham and all over the country. It's not just in Newcastle.

"We are anticipating a great turnout, including many important figures in society.

"In a few years, there will be few, if any, of us left and it may be the last chance to say thank you for the dreadful sacrifices that were made during the war. Although the parade is in honour of the lucky ones who survived, it is a nice way to say thank you to those who didn't survive. …
