Durham Enjoy a Winning Start to Season

Durham made a winning start to their totesport League season with a nine-run victory under the Duckworth-Lewis method against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

Set a target of 176, the Dynamos had reached 85 for three off 22 overs when rain and bad light sent the teams off the field in this Division Two clash.

With no further play possible, the score was enough to give the visitors the win that completed the double over Leicestershire, who were beaten by an innings in the Frizzell County Championship game between the sides.

The Foxes, having won the toss, made a dismal start with John Maunders and Aftab Habib both back in the pavilion with only four runs on the board.

Liam Plunkett claimed both wickets in an impressive opening spell. But Darren Maddy and Leicestershire captain Hylton Ackerman pulled things round with a third-wicket stand of 98 in 23 overs that looked to have given the home side the edge.

But having reached 50 off 85 balls, Maddy was lbw to a quicker delivery from spin bowler Gareth Breese.

Durham felt they had claimed Maddy's wicket much earlier when he edged a delivery from Australian Mick Lewis to slip where Paul Collingwood took a diving low catch.

Maddy stood his ground, however, uncertain whether the ball had carried, and after consultation the umpires decided in favour of the batsman.

Once Maddy had departed, a collapse set in, with Ackerman run out for 46 and three wickets falling for six runs in the space of four overs.

Only an unbeaten 29 from Paul Nixon took the Foxes to 175 for eight.

But Durham were always up with the rate in their reply, despite two wickets for Otis Gibson. Nicky Peng top-scored for the Dynamos with 36 before the rain arrived.

* RAIN was the biggest winner on the first day of the totesport League with only one of the eight matches reaching a proper conclusion. …
