The tables have been turned on Redcar's charity music man Norman Evans MBE.

Over the years, Norman has raised more than pounds 250,000 by busking for good causes.

But now, for once, he's on the receiving end of a charitable gesture.

On behalf of the Merchant Navy Association's Dormanstown/Redcar branch and Coastwatch Redcar, Ian Barnes and nephew John tackled a sponsored walk between Staithes and Redcar.

And they are using the pounds 700 collected to send Norman and wife Ethel on a well deserved holiday.

Ian, who pushed Norman in his wheelchair as he led last year's Merchant Navy Day parade, said: "After all the years Norman has given to everyone else, it was time the people of Redcar gave to him.

"He never takes a penny piece for himself, so this was the only way we could think of to make sure he got something in return for all the good work he has done."

Norman and Ethel will be taking a four day break in Blackpool at a hotel particularly suited to coping with his multiple sclerosis. …
