Council Puts Abandoned Cars Up for Sale on eBay; Aristocrat's Rover Left in Car Park Goes Up for Grabs

IT IS a novel approach to tackling the scourge of abandoned cars littering the streets of London: a council has started selling off the vehicles on auction website eBay.

It has already sold scores of cars, including a Range Rover for [pounds sterling]6,600.

Westminster council, thought to be the first local authority in the UK to get rid of abandoned vehicles via the net, said it was more cost-effective than a conventional auction.

A spokesman said: "We have dozens of cars just left in our car parks every year. Often they are in very good condition."

People frequently pay for parking while they jet off around the world - then fail to return.

"We've had sports cars left before," said the spokesman. "It's a sign of our throwaway society."

An average of 30 cars a year are left in Westminster's car parks, and unlike those abandoned at the roadside, they tend to be roadworthy and highly saleable.

Legally, if a car is taking up a space which would earn the council money, the authority has the right to recoup its losses by selling the vehicle. …
