Rally Duo's Sights Firmly Fixed on Title

North-east duo Gavin Spencer and Steve Waggett head to Somerset this weekend determined to improve their championship prospects having made a promising start to their latest rally campaign.

The pair ( driver and co-driver respectively ( boast more than 20 years of racing experience between them and, having won the Scottish Borders Rally for the last two years are hoping for another successful season.

Spencer and Waggett are fourth in the British Trials and Rally Drivers Association 1400cc Championship table and say their achievements so far this year have exceeded even their own expectations. And the GS Rally Team colleagues will hope to continue their recent fine form when their challenge for honours resumes in Minehead at the weekend.

"We're having a great year and have so far exceeded our own expectations," said Waggett, a construction manager from County Durham who has competed from the passenger seat since 1986. "The championship is one of the most hotly-contested rallies with 60 registered teams vying for first place.

"Some of our competitors are racing 16 valve cars but it's not all down to power, it's about skill, trust and teamwork."

While Waggett has the bulk of the team's experience ( Spencer, an accountant from Boldon, has been competing for just four years ( the pair have formed a strong bond and success has followed.

The pair's hardy Vauxhall Nova has consistently outperformed some formidable rivals. And that has left the GS garage with their sights fixed on the title.

"When you are driving through a forest at high speeds there is little room for error and therefore planning, quick reflexes and trust are all essential," Waggett said. "As a team we have learned a lot from this year's competition and we're confident that we will finish in a strong position ( if not as the overall winner. …
