Whitley Bay Operatic Society brings the ever-popular Hello Dolly! to the town's Playhouse stage next week.

Set in New York at the turn of the century, the show includes all the memorable songs such as Hello Dolly!, Put On Your Sunday Clothes and Elegance.

Riding high on the successes of their last two productions, Oliver! and Copacabana, the society is looking forward to entertaining audiences again.

Steven Smith has been a member of the society for almost 30 years and has played many leading roles including Luther Billis (South Pacific), Nathan Detroit (Guys & Dolls), Julian Marsh (42nd Street), Mack Sennett (Mack and Mabel) and, more recently, Fagin (Oliver!).

Steven played Barnaby Tucker when the society last performed Hello Dolly! and is looking forward to tackling the more "mature" role of Horace Vandergelder this time.

He met his wife Alison during rehearsals for that last production in 1981, and thinks maybe this goes to show how effective a matchmaker Dolly is! …
