BCC Warns on Tax

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is calling for all three main political parties to pledge that business tax bills will not go up in the next Parliament.

BCC president and North-East businessman Bill Midgley is making the call at the organisation's annual conference after a survey which showed that 90pc of business leaders feared future tax increases would be damaging to their firms.

Chancellor Gordon Brown and Tory Michael Howard are due to address BCC delegates today.

URGENT action is needed to make UK consumers save more money, an influential forecasting group claims today.

The Ernst & Young Item Club, which bases its predictions on the Treasury's model of the economy, said the country's low savings rate was affecting the balance of the economy.

The group's spring forecast painted a strong picture of the economy in the short term but warned that issues such as savings and the country's pensions deficit would prove a strain in the longer term. …
