Hunday Herd Selection for Anniversary Sale

Article excerpt

Byline: By Anna Lognonne

To mark the 75th anniversary of the Hunday herd, the Moffitt family, from Peepy, near Stocksfield, are offering a selection of some of their best dairy cattle for sale at Carlisle tomorrow.

Auctioneers Norton and Brooksbank have selected 75 of the younger milking females from the very top of the Hunday herd for the sale, which is being hosted jointly with Harrison and Hetherington. These cows will be joined by a selection of served and maiden heifers and three well bred young bulls and bull calves.

Also being offered for sale on the day will be a selection of calved, served and maiden heifers from the Frankham herd, which is run by Messrs EC Spence from Frankham Farm, Fourstones, Hexham.

Mr Moffitt retired from the active side of the family business a number of years ago and the herd is now under the direction of his son Peter, who is ably assisted by Philip Oliver and his wife Maureen, who have been with the herd for 25 years.

The Hunday herd used to be milked in three units, but today it is now concentrated at Peepy Farm, near Stocksfield, where 350 cows are milked under a commercial system, being housed in cubicles and fed a total mixed ration.

Twenty previous sales have been held from the Peepy herd, the last being on the occasion of the herd's Diamond Jubilee in 1990.

Few prefixes are as well known in UK Holstein circles as Hunday, and the cattle are always keenly sought by other breeders. There are numerous instances of them providing the platform for top families in other herds and it is hoped that this sale will continue the tradition, with some top young cattle up for sale. …
