COLLEGE BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK; Point Guard Hodge Signs with Florida

Walter Hodge, a 6-foot point guard from Melbourne Florida Air Academy, signed with the University of Florida on Friday.

Hodge, the Class 3A Player of the Year, averaged 25.4 points, 5.4 steals and 4.2 assists per game this past season. He led Florida Air to an undefeated season, scoring 33 points in the state title game.

"Walter adds speed, quickness and shooting to our backcourt," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "He has the potential to be a very good defender and is coming out of a great high school program."

VIRGINIA TO HIRE LEITAO

DePaul's Dave Leitao has accepted an offer to become Virginia's coach, his former athletic director said.

"I'm absolutely confirming. Coach Leitao told me he took the job at Virginia," DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto said.

Leitao's hiring will be formally announced today, ending a 4 1/2-week search that followed Pete Gillen's resignation on March 14. Leitao had a 58-34 record in three years at DePaul, reaching the NCAA Tournament two years ago and the NIT this year, losing in the second round to Texas A&M.

UNC'S FELTON MAKES UP MIND

Just days after Rashad McCants said he was leaving North Carolina for the NBA, the national champion Tar Heels are waiting to find out which teammate might be next.

At least one could soon make an announcement.

The mother of junior Raymond Felton said Friday that the speedy point guard might reveal his plans late next week. Felton himself said earlier this week that he has made his decision.

Felton, who averaged 13 points per game, and his parents met with coach Roy Williams this week. He told reporters that he had already made his decision but wouldn't reveal it.
