Move over Tiger Woods ( Michelle mania could be hitting the Open Championship at St Andrews in July.

The Royal and Ancient Club, who run the tournament, opened the door to the 15-year-old golfing sensation Michelle Wie when they said women could play in the tournament if they met the qualification criteria.

It is a quantum leap in attitude from the ruling body of the game, whose own amateur club at St Andrews bars women and children.

Top women pros such as Annika Sorenstam and Wie, currently in the amateur ranks, could qualify via an invite on the US men's tour.

The move was last night welcomed by the North's leading female administrator, Cathy Bowerbank, last year's chairman of the English Ladies' Golf Association.

A former champion of both Durham and Yorkshire, Cathy is a member of the Seaton Carew club in Hartlepool and Dinsdale Spa, Darlington.

"Seeing a youngster like Michelle getting an opportunity such as this helps to destroy the false image that women golfers are a bunch of old fuddy-duddies," she said. …
