A doctor has admitted she had no grounds for claiming children had been drugged as part of alleged sex abuse.

Dr Camille De San Lazaro, a leading expert on child abuse cases, was yesterday read testimony she made during an earlier legal hearing in front of the General Medical Council.

In the hearing she agreed she had added unsubstantiated allegations when writing a compensation claim form.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Lazaro, pictured, faces a charge of serious professional misconduct.

She worked as a forensic paediatrician at the Lindisfarne Centre in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle during the early 1990s.

She was involved in investigating child sex abuse claims at a Newcastle nursery. Nursery nurses Dawn Reed and Christopher Lillie were charged with sex abuse but later cleared.

Dr Lazaro helped compile compensation applications on behalf of the families of children.

Libel proceedings were brought by the nursery nurses following their acquittal. …
