When Danielle Coleman appeared at Teesside Crown Court she must have feared that her attack on a defenceless woman would be severely punished.

This was, after all, the latest in a series of violent acts.

Judge George Moorhouse told the 21-year-old mugger in no uncertain terms that her offence of assault with intent to rob, which involved punching a Jordanian woman in the mouth and trying to snatch her handbag, justified a lengthy custodial sentence.

Today, then, she must be mightily relieved that instead of languishing behind bars she is looking forward to getting on with her life in a newly-furnished house.

In giving Danielle Coleman three years community rehabilitation along with psychiatric treatment, the judge took into account recommendations that she would benefit from being dealt with in this way.

It is now up to those looking after her interests to make sure such confidence is well founded.

The judge told her that it was up to her to lead a normal life and take advantage of the help she was being offered. …
