Raising Profile of Newcastle Gateshead

Jessica Roberts, operations manager for the Newcastle Gateshead Convention Bureau, explains how the area is breaking new ground by developing additional markets to help sell the destination to an even wider international audience.

Newcastle Gateshead has grown dramatically as a conference destination in the past five years and the industry now generates an impressive pounds 100m a year.

One of the reasons for its considerable success in a relatively short period of time is due to significant business wins in the international conference market.

Conference delegates are high-spending visitors but international delegates are highest spending of all.

Newcastle Gateshead Convention Bureau took its next steps towards developing this evolving European strategy by attending IMEX, the international markets expo, in Frankfurt for the first time this year, in a bid to target the more than 3,000 conference buyers who visit the show from around the globe. This exhibition has become the worldwide benchmark for the meetings and incentive travel industry and during the week-long event it attracted around 9,000 representatives from over 130 countries.

Those attending came from some of our most important markets such as incentive houses, international association management companies and blue chip corporations such as Siemens, American Express and conference agencies who place huge volumes of business worldwide.

While in Frankfurt, as well as representing Newcastle Gateshead at the exhibition and meeting hundreds of visitors interested in finding out more about what we had to offer as a destination, I was also invited to attend a seminar for experts in the association buyers market.

This represented an excellent opportunity to hear first-hand just exactly what those working in this highly lucrative industry really look for when considering destinations for their events. …
