Newcastle United should press on in their bid to sign Fulham's Luis Boa Morte ( according to his former team-mate John Beresford.

Ex-Magpie Beresford was at Southampton with Boa Morte, who Graeme Souness unsuccessfully tried to sign in the January transfer window.

The midfielder, who had admitted he was keen on a move to St James' Park, ended up signing an extension to his Craven Cottage contract keeping him at the club until 2008, and this week lined up for Fulham against Newcastle.

The 27-year-old was not at his best against United on Wednesday night, but Souness is ready to renew his bid to sign the Portuguese in the summer.

And Beresford believes talented Boa Morte's athleticism and work-rate appeal to Souness, who needs to sign a left-sided player to replace the out-of-favour Laurent Robert.

Beresford also thinks that Boa Morte will add something to the dressing room, with captain Alan Shearer having tellingly stated that the club needs to buy the "right players with the right characters" during the summer. …
