Patients needing heart treatment can expect some of the best in the country at a Teesside hospital.

The James Cook University Hospital's heart services have taken to the international centre stage with a number of revolutionary studies.

Dr Mike Stewart, clinical director for cardiology, believes the unit is one of the biggest in the country in terms of operations and treatments - dealing with more than 1,250 heart attack patients each year.

"In several areas there are leading edge innovations in terms of new ways of treating heart disease taking place here," he says.

The hospital trust is the only one in the country to use the Maze procedure, a new form of surgery for treating irregular heart beats, a condition very common in the population.

The procedure is used in America and surgeons at James Cook are training others around the county to carry out the operation.

Experts at the hospital can also now tie in the procedure with a heart by-pass operation. …
