With the opening of a new coarse angling season on rivers not too far away, now is the time to start thinking about the season ahead.

Maintenance of tackle is essential at this time of the year and work done now will keep you in good stead for the following nine months.

Poles in particular will need to be inspected for cracks to joints and weak spots on each section and these can easily be repaired by the staff at your local tackle shop.

Elastics will need to be renewed and any faulty connectors will need to be replaced.

A wash down with a shower head will help clean any grit or congealed mud from the inside of the sections and the joints could be given a rub with either furniture polish or baby wipes.

Float rigs made up from last year will need to be inspected and replaced if necessary as line does fatigue after time.

Spare tops should also be inspected for the same as the above then once the season starts they won't let you down.

There will be more about maintenance to tackle next week.

Poles have been taking a real hammering again this week with the high winds and storms of last weekend around the region and there have been some expensive breakages to sections.

In high winds it is better to concentrate on the feeder or bomb rod rather than risk the pole because with some poles costing as much as pounds 5,000 it is a very high risk strategy.

LAST Wednesday 63 anglers turned out for the midweek open match at Woodlands and the short pole dominated from Partridge peg 21 again.

Dave Bailey (Ted Carter) drew the famous peg and made no mistake by fishing the pole close in with pellet to take carp to 12lb in his cracking 141lb 12oz net.

Tony Woods (Maver Barnsley) on Partridge 23 also fished close in with meat for his 102lb 14oz and Mal Bailey (MAP Elton) was third with 80lb 12oz. …
