Long sands beach at Tynemouth holds many-a-special memory for ex-RAF navigator, John Nichol, who will be seen revisiting his favourite North-East place in tonight's programme. [tues]

North Shields-born John, who was shot down and captured during the first Gulf War, says the beach features heavily in his childhood memories ( whether he was walking with his parents, or hanging out with his friends as a teenager.

And now he has introduced the latest addition to the Nichol family ( his seven-week old daughter Sophie ( to his favourite place.

John, who left the region in his late teens and now lives with his wife, Suzannah and Sophie, in Hertfordshire, said: "When I think about the North-East and my childhood there, Long Sands beach is probably my first memory ( sitting on the beach with my mum and dad.

"And then as I got older, I started going there with my mates. We would go along from North Shields and spend seven or eight hours on the beach. …
