Friends of an asylum seeker booted out of the UK without warning said they do not know whether he is alive or dead.

Nothing has been heard from Ali Jafari, 25, since he was dramatically deported to Afghanistan.

The Gazette reported earlier this month how he was seized by immigration officials at Middlesbrough police station when he attended a regular appointment as part of his asylum conditions.

Mr Jafari, who lived in Middlesbrough for 18 months, was deported the next day without any belongings or the medication he was taking for mental health problems.

It emerged that a letter to say he would be deported was sent to his solicitor on the morning of the day he was seized.

Friends branded the move as a "dirty trick" and nothing has been heard of him since.

Abdul Mohammad, who lives in the Gresham area of Middlesbrough, said: "I don't know what's happened to him. He has not phoned me and I do not know where he is. …
