A schoolboy nominated by his headteacher has won a special award for his efforts to help victims of the Boxing Day tsunami.

Alex Bagher, 12, has won a Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award.

Alex, who has language and learning difficulties, attends Percy Hedley School in Forest Hall, Newcastle.

He saved up his own pocket money and carried out tasks at home such as washing cars to raise money for tsunami victims in Thailand and Indonesia.

He also encouraged his friends at school to participate in raising money and as a result all his class members were involved.

Headteacher Lynn Watson said: "I was so proud of Alex and the efforts he made on behalf of others, I felt it was a very mature thing for him to do.

"We spoke to the children about the tsunami, and rather than asking them to ask their parents for a donation, we wanted them to think about something they could do themselves and Alex was motivated by this. …
