We've been mulling over the pet situation for some time now, and while we would love a dog, it would be unfair to leave it at home for long periods while we're both out at work.

Besides which, we couldn't agree on the type of dog we both wanted. My arguments for a cocker spaniel weren't working so I more or less knew Chris would laugh in my face at the mere hint of a Geri Halliwell-style Shitsu.

Luckily, we're both cat lovers as well, so we decided to start looking for a mature cat. As much as I'd love a kitten, there was no way I was going to subject my carpets, let alone my Dad's decorating, to hours of fun with teeny claws.

Besides, there's plenty of cats out there that are in need of a good home.

As soon as this decision was made, Chris didn't have time to draw breath; in my excitement, I dragged him to numerous pet stores to purchase the relevant bits and bobs.

Before long, we had everything we could possibly need. A litter tray, cute little food and water bowls, its own baby fork, a brush, a toy mouse, and I'd even cleared out a kitchen cupboard of its very own ( for all the Whiskers pouches.

We took all of the items home and I dotted them around the house, in all the relevant places. With the equipment in place, I was a little disappointed ( practically in tears, actually ( that it wasn't going to be put to immediate use. Chris decided it best to pop all of the things out of sight and into the loft and we started contacting various charities and scanning the local papers for a loving house cat who liked cuddles. And if they fancied being tucked under my arm or into my handbag to come out shopping with me, then all the better. You can see that I'm still not quite over the Shitsu issue yet.

But I'm pleased to say I became the proud mother of a four-year-old cat called Millie. …
