Kelly Trips Up on School Statistics; in Brief
EDUCATION Secretary Ruth Kelly fluffed her lines badly today after repeatedly muddling key school statistics. Ms Kelly, 36, was tripped up as she publicised new plans to tackle bad behaviour in schools on BBC Radio 4's Today programme. In a shambolic performance, she used outdated statistics on unsatisfactory behaviour in schools in an attempt to play down the scale of the problem. She was later forced to accept that the most recent figures are far more damning.
London's new phone number
LONDON is to get its fourth telephone number shake-up in 14 years. Most new eight-digit numbers will begin with the figure 3 rather than the 7 and 8 currently in use. Telecom firms will begin issuing numbers starting with 020 followed by eight digits beginning with 3, 7 or 8 in June. The move will increase the list of number combinations for the capital from 20 million to 30 million. Numbers were first separated into inner and outer London codes in 1991 but the last change was only in 2002.
