Newcastle City Council is considering measures to expand recycling by householders. In our street we have recently started to trial weekly collections and now cardboard must be put out with the usual newspapers, tins and bottles. Yesterday morning at 7.45am, those of us who had put out our boxes the night before had them emptied, but the rain-soaked bundles of cardboard were left at the side of the road. It's all very well telling householders how important recycling is, but in this instance Newcastle City Council seems to have forgotten to tell their contractors about the new initiative and it's simply increased the problem of littering.

I totally agree with RH, of Elswick, that this country is out of control. DNA now can establish if someone is guilty of rape, murder etc. Absolute penalties must be brought back, such as hanging.

I guarantee that there would be an immediate drop in violent crime. All the politicians do is talk but action is what is needed, starting with teachers and police being given back authority to deal with disrespect and violence. …
