LONDONERS laugh more than anyone else in Britain, researchers have discovered.

On average we chuckle 16 times a day compared with a national average of 14.

The Welsh are the most unhappy, with only 11 laughs a day.

Londoners are also the most likely to enjoy an uncontrollable belly-laugh, with 64 per cent having one at least once a day, compared with a national average of 60 per cent. But we are all laughing less than in the past.

Amanda Bate, of holiday firm Ocean Village which commissioned the survey, said: "In the Fifties we laughed for an average of 18 minutes daily, but this has dropped to just six minutes per day.

"Laughter is an essential ingredient of a healthy, happy life and ... adults need to learn how to laugh again and recapture their childhood playfulness."

The researchers found that laughter was seasonal, with 72 per cent of Londoners happiest in July and August and 54 per cent at their most miserable in January. …
