Finding Fool Is Serious Business

Calling all fools in the North ( next week could be your big break.

A Cumbrian castle is searching for its first jester in more than 350 years.

Cumbrian brewery Jennings has stepped in to support Muncaster Castle's competition to find a jester.

And the prize for the winner is no joke ( pounds 500 plus a crate of Jennings beer every month for a year.

The competition, dubbed the Fool Factor, aims to find a modern-day jester who can entertain an audience in the way fools did in days long gone by.

Muncaster Castle, near Ravenglass, west Cumbria, is the home of the original Tom Fool ( Thomas Skelton ( and, since at least 1208, of the Pennington family.

Peter Frost Pennington, who manages the visitor attraction castle, said: "Muncaster's jester, Tom Fool, was the inspiration for the fool in Shakespeare's King Lear, giving the word "tomfoolery" to the English language. So it seems appropriate that we should once again have an official fool. …
