America's been good for former Journal Champion of Champions Anna Scott.

The Consett golfer is back in England brimming with confidence and shattered the field in qualifying for the Durham County Ladies Championship at Eaglescliffe yesterday.

In appalling conditions of wind and rain, she posted two rounds of 72 to stand 11 shots clear of England international Faye Sanderson (Heworth) and Durham City's highly rated Danielle Roseberry, also back home from college in the USA.

Anna is at Georgia State, which is where Hexham's Northumberland County player Ben Taylor is also a student, on a golf and business studies scholarship, and she has made an impact with the women's golf team, the Lady Panthers.

They won the title at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, in DeLand, Florida, which took them into the NCAA Regional Finals.

Anna finished fourth in the individual event and was voted into the All-Tournament team, an outstanding achievement in her freshman year.

At the Georgia State Athletics department's annual awards ceremony, she was named Freshman of the Year which goes to the most outstanding freshman from any sport in the university. Also in her first semester at college, Anna was recognised for her academic excellence by being named to the Dean's List.

"It took me a while to get used to life over there," said Anna. "I was very homesick for the first few weeks but then there was much golf to be played and so many other things to do that it passed.

"The biggest thing I suppose is that it has done wonders for my confidence. I've made a lot of new friends and I'm really enjoying life."

Anna, Faye and Danielle will all be playing in Tropicana Essentials Ladies British Amateur Championship at Littlestone next Tuesday, along with Northumberland County Champion Julie Ross (Whitley Bay) and another England cap Lisa Ball (Matfen Hall). …
