Soap heart-throb is to play himself in TV's Byker Grove

Former EastEnders star Nick Bailey is ditching the stethoscope to make his small-screen comeback in Byker Grove.

Heart-throb actor Nick, who played Dr Antony Truman until he quit the series two years ago, will step out of a people carrier and into the youth club as himself.

The plot is that Nick is appearing in a play in Newcastle and has been asked to the Grove to talk to aspiring actors.

But in true Grove style, not everybody is pleased that he has come and he faces problems.

Nick said: "My agent phoned me and told me about the idea and I've never worked on a show like this so I thought it would be a good idea.

"All the kids in the programme are so talented, as is the director, so I was very keen to do it.

"I've always been passionate about children and education so doing this just goes that one step further."

Playing himself is something the 32-year-old found uncomfortable. …
