Quiz supremo Gordon Barrass is the apple of his mum's eye after splashing out on a new car for her from his winnings.

The 47-year-old has turned his life around after scooping pounds 250,000 on ITV's quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

He has been able to clear debts of around pounds 30,000 and pack in his job as a civil servant in Longbenton.

But he is continuing to live in the same street in his home town of Ashington, where he is being treated as a minor celebrity.

Gordon promised mum Joan a private knee-replacement op with his winnings, but she opted to be dealt with by the NHS.

So instead she got a new TV and a Vauxhall Corsa.

Gordon said: "I've had absolutely no negative feedback since winning in the show. Strangers shout across the street to congratulate me.

"Everybody I meet is coming up to say they saw me on telly. …
