For Movie Fans, the Marathon Starts Thursday

More than 50 films, a handful of workshops, a whole bunch of parties and an appearance by actor Graham Greene highlight the Jacksonville Film Festival, taking place downtown and in San Marco and Riverside Thursday through Sunday.

It kicks off Thursday evening with an opening night reception at the Florida Theatre. The party starts at 7 p.m., and two films, Zit, a short, and Phil the Alien, a feature-length comedy, are scheduled to be shown. Tickets for the reception are $15.

Also Thursday night, Murderball, a documentary about wheelchair rugby players, screens at the San Marco Theatre at 9:30. Tickets are $7.50. It's been a big hit at film festivals and will get national distribution this summer; a couple of the film's stars are scheduled to appear.

On Friday, the Florida Theatre screens Mutual Appreciation at 6 p.m. and Childstar at 9:30 p.m. The San Marco Theatre shows short films at 11 a.m., Sabado at 1:30 p.m., Static and The Girl from Monday at 6:30 p.m., Average Joe and My Big Fat Independent Movie at 9 p.m. Theatre Jacksonville plays host to a screenwriting workshop at 9 a.m., Days of Santiago at 11:30 a.m., Kings of Christmas and I, Curmudgeon at 2 p.m., Days Like These and The Works at 5 p.m., Derailroaded at 8 p.m. and a series of shorts at 10:30 p.m.

The Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art will be transformed into Rick's Cafe Americain for a Casablanca-themed party at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $30 for JMOMA members and $50 for non-members.

On Saturday, the Florida Theatre shows Cheerleader and Damn Good Dog at 2 p.m. and SpamKu and The Almost Guys at 7:30 p.m. Greene, who appeared in Dances With Wolves, Snow Dogs, The Green Mile and TV's Northern Exposure, will be honored at 7:30 at the Florida Theatre.
