A fire at a recreation centre in Seaton Burn partially destroyed the building.

A changing room was destroyed by the flames and the rest of the building was damaged when the blaze broke out around 9.45pm on Thursday. Two fire crews from Gosforth and one from Cramlington attended. The building was empty but the cause of the fire is unknown.

Ascot success

NORTH Yorkshire Police have declared the Royal Ascot event at York a great success.

Record crowds of 52,000 attended the day of racing yesterday but there was only one arrest for drunk and disorderly behaviour and only a handful of thefts from bags.

Man missing

CONCERN is increasing over the disappearance of a former doorman from Teesside.

Graham Stephenson, 30, of Dale Street, New Marske, went missing on May 14 after leaving the house he shared with his partner.

Mr Stephenson went out to buy a car and called at a house in Brotton to pick up some clothes. But he failed to meet a friend in Yarm and concern over his safety has been growing since then. …
