North Golden Boy Deacon Overcomes a Major Hurdle

Jared Deacon continued his flirtation with hurdle competition by winning the North of England title at SportCity, Manchester (writes Bill McGuirk).

The Commonwealth and European 400 metre relay gold medallist came close to his best-ever time as he lifted the gold medal in 52.90 seconds.

The 29-year-old South Shields Harrier then contested the 200 metres and recorded 21.86sec to progress to the final, where he finished outside the medals in fifth place.

However, there was a medal for Morpeth's David Riley, whose 21.39sec was good enough for third place.

Morpeth duo Nisha Desai and Julia Straker came close to equalling their best-ever performances in the 800 metres and triple jump respectively.

Sunderland's Gavin Massingham won the men's tactical 800 metres, having finished in third place last year and second in 2003.

Gateshead discus thrower Claire also had to be content with second place behind Blackpool's Kara Nwidobie. …
