WHENEVER people talk about Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) they always talk about the dancers.

Sleek, fleet and nimble, they are ballet trained but bred with a sort of contemporary urban aesthetic - but one that doesn't feel uptight or hard-edged. Instead, there's ease in the moves, and every pure dance step placed has a dazzling physical intelligence.

NDT really does have some of the best dancers in the world, and it's little wonder that Sadler's Wells was packed last week when the ensemble came to town. They performed a fulllength piece created by onetime NDT director Jiri Kylian and made in 1998 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Dutch constitution. This wasn't explained in the programme, although it wouldn't have helped much because One of a Kind contains few clues to its inspiration.

The piece was in three short parts, which made it a bit stop-go, with a sound score by Brett Dean and a set by Japanese architect Atsushi Kitagawara best described as a massive, minimalist mystery. …
